Ocean City Fire Department to Offer Its Annual Junior Firefighter Camp

Since 2010, the Ocean City Fire Department has offered its Junior Firefighter Camp, which provides kids ages 9–12 with a firsthand look into what it’s like to be a firefighter.

The annual four-day camp is held in July with this year’s camp taking place July 22–25. This popular summer camp is one which kids love to attend and many children return each and every year to hone their skills as junior firefighters.

“We get to show the kids a small glimpse of what it’s like to be a firefighter,” states Deputy Chief Vito DiMarco.

During the educational and fun camp, the junior firefighters get to experience a wide array of firefighting activities in a safe and controlled environment.

“The kids go through several different elements that might cause them to work outside of their comfort zone, such as putting on fire gear and crawling through a fake smoke-filled room to look for a person, climbing ladders, and rappelling,” explains DiMarco. “We teach them that, through education, self-confidence, and teamwork, they can achieve more than they could ever imagine.”

The highly-applauded Ocean City Junior Firefighter Camp wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the Ocean City firefighters themselves who volunteer on their days off to ensure the smooth running and successful activities of the camp.

Although the occupancy for this year’s camp is filled, be sure to mark it down on your calendar for next year, if you have children within the 9–12 age range. Registration for the Ocean City camps open up on May 1 each year and this one fills up quickly, so keep it on your radar if your kids wish to attend.

Also, be sure to show your support for the Ocean City Fire Department. You can visit their eye-catching newly revamped website to learn more about Ocean City’s career fire department. On the website, you’ll also be able to learn more about this camp, check out the latest Ocean City Fire Department events, learn about the Ocean City Firefighters Foundation, and even buy some OCFD products to support the department.

And, most importantly, thank you to the Ocean City Fire Department for keeping the community safe year-round!
